![]() Yes you can do it but it can be a pain to adjust cause you are loosening the grip head. The C-stands hollywood arms 20" and 40" are not the first choice to use to hold the main strobes with modifiers. I also own two mini booms and a Jr boom as well as C-stands. I am not sure what the person was talking about who gave the review. Peter I have the Calumet boom and I just put a 5/8 pin in and I am good to go. If you are doing still life or shots where you don't move the lights then ok. C-stands are cool looking but like Bob said you have to use your muscles to move them around. Peter what type of photography work are you doing? what type of space do you have? What is your budget? The Matthews baby roller is one of the best rollers that can handle almost anything and a must when using booms. First time I have fallen off that ladder in 30 years I have used it. It could have been ugly because landing in the sweep, I didn't know when I was about to hit the floor. Tight because I was taking a before photo to start dieting for a bodybuilding contest. I heard a snap when I landed and thought as my ankle and wrist swelled, I must have broken something till I checked everything and discovered the snap on my extremely tight pants had popped. My thought as I was falling was that 9' roll is gonna hurt when it falls from up there and lands on me and I shoulda sandbagged the stands. I never short cut basic safety techniques now after mistakenly stepping off my ladder onto the seamless sweep I was hanging thinking it was the floor. It held fine for weeks in the boomed position stored. Didn't even bother to switch the boom arm to "tighty righty" since I was only doing some comparison tests on a bust of Julius Caesar. I think the 40 inch grip arm is basic gear and ideally that and the 20 inch should be in every grip kit as they make positioning so much easier especially when trying to get more downward angle with the beauty dish. ![]() With the larger boom, better work on your military press in the gym for height adjustments. Try moving a c stand with all that hanging off. I use a rolling stand with at least one sand bag and it still rolls smoothly. I only hang it out what is necessary to get the stand out of the shot and for clam shell I only use about half the bar making the tipping less significant. Now for longer distance booming say a hair light, then the heavier boom. I have the Avenger mini but it weighs a ton and add that to the 5 lbs AB, couple pound modifier and a couple lb counter weight, the solid steel grip arm is definitely more manageable. ![]() Peter, I use a 40 inch grip arm, baby pin and t top with the AB's and beauty dish or even 5' octa.
